Hey Maggie.

The rain in Nua Múrtha is cold today. Too cold for the season. It makes me remember how you could never decide which season you liked best. Whenever it was Keodlúth you thought it was too hot and you wished it was Glaçante. And so on. I always preferred Chimère. But lately I’ve been getting sick of the rain.

Most days I’m watching the rain out of my office window anyway. It’s either paperwork or it’s talking to a certain kind of reporter. “Ms. Chalk, why weren’t you present at the coronation of the Stratiform Mantle?” “Ms. Chalk, what can the Expedience do to help the city that the Mainland Ops can’t?” You know. New names but the same old shit.

Feels like everything’s falling apart more than usual though. Some kind of witch with a crocodile or something showed up at the Clement Ball to rat out the nobility and show they’re even worse than we thought. Then this delivery company dame keeps showing up at my office and immediately tripping over her own shoelaces. And Detective Dormer is losing it. Like more than normal. I don’t know if he’s getting any sleep at all. And… But all that’s for the case files. Not for you.

There’s something else for you this time. It’s the cylinder of those songs you liked. The cello and piano songs. You know. I don’t know who recorded them. The names on the label wore away a long time ago.

I keep trying to listen to them and think of something other than you. It’s not going to work. I can’t handle it any more. So the cylinder’s going over the Edge along with this letter.

This would be easier if you had just left the city. Like so many people seem to be doing lately. I could imagine you were alive somewhere beyond the cold and the rain. But I guess you wouldn’t be coming back either way.
